The solution Container terminals

The challenge

Founded in 1908, Addicks & Kreye (A&K) is an all-round provider of container services. Loading and unloading inland vessels involves working under the quay wall, handling containers weighing 45 tons in the first row and 36 tons in the second row. A&K uses a customised Kalmar reachstacker with a 7.5 metre wheelbase, equipped with hydraulic spreader extension arms.

The solution

Despite its size and weight, the barge handler is very flexible and efficient," says Björn Steffen, Service Manager, Terminal Equipment at Cargotec. It operates 1,200 hours a year because with tight port schedules there's no room for downtime.

The results

The giant machine features an efficient Volvo Euro III motor and Kalmar's CAN-Bus-based control system, which ensures high availability and lower life-cycle costs. Kalmar's network of specialised technicians made it an easy choice for A&K. "We also offer a remote maintenance service that allows the operator to send the vehicle data via mobile phone or internet to the specialists," adds Björn Steffen.
